Armed Violence Reduction (AVR) Project Field Manager – Danish Demining Group – South Sudan

Danish Demining Group, a technical unit within Danish Refugee Council, is currently looking for a highly qualified Project Manager to lead and further develop the Armed Violence Reduction programme in South Sudan.

About the job
The AVR Project Manager (AVR PM) will manage 5 national staff, and will be responsible for building on initial phases of youth-focused programming launched in South Sudan’s Greater Upper Nile region. The post holder is expected to contribute to the development and improvement of AVR activities in South Sudan and the region. A key aspect is holding primary responsibility for guiding national staff in identifying and engaging vulnerable youth at risk of succumbing to negative and potentially violent coping mechanism. The AVR PM will manage and drive forward this process, including liaison with contacts within other DRC departments and external partner agencies that can provide support to DDG’s beneficiary group. The post holder will spend the majority of their time at DDG’s AVR field sites (currently Maban and Bentiu), with regular travel to the country headoffice in Juba.

Duties and responsibilities
1. PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION & MANAGEMENT: field-based supervision of activities, with a focus on quality control and improvement. Identify best practices, methodologies and modes of operation, founded on the needs of direct beneficiaries and their wider communities. As new projects stabilise, build leadership capacity of national staff to take over greater responsibility of day-to-day activities.
2. & RELATIONSHIPS: Work closely with field-based DRC Protection teams to identify and engage target beneficiaries for support. Act as the focal point for all liaison with DRC sectors and external partners, with the aim of facilitating multi-sectoral support to DDG’s beneficiaries.
3. REPORTING: ensure quality control and timeliness of daily activity reporting from field, including capacity development of staff to effectively document and analyse information being gathered in the field.
4. PROGRAMME DEVELOPMENT: conduct regular field-based needs assessment and M&E, ranging from anecdotal qualitative research up to full-sample household surveys. Build on data collection and management processes to ensure high-quality and thorough documentation of AVR progamme development.
5. DONOR RELATIONS AND FUNDRAISING: in cooperation with senior management, design and negotiate new funding and projects as necessary. Input to and write donor narrative reports.

About you
To be successful in this role we expect you to have 3 years of relevant experience, including 1 at the international level. All employees should master DRC’s core competencies: Communicating, Taking the lead, Collaborating, Striving for excellence and Demonstrating integrity.

Moreover, we also expect the following:
Required
• Master’s degree (or an additional 2 years’ international experience, ie. 3 years in total) in a social science, eg. human security, international development, humanitarian assistance, conflict resolution, or similar.
• Proven training, mentoring and facilitation skills
• Experience with quantitative and qualitative surveys/research methodologies.
• Demonstrable cultural sensitivity and security awareness
• Excellent grasp of English, including outstanding writing skills
• Comfortable working in basic conditions for extended periods

Desirable
• Previous experience managing field teams, logistics and financial systems strongly preferred
• Experience working with conflict management, youth programming, social care or similar.
• Previous experience of programme design and development, including proposal writing and project cycle management.
• Previous experience of working in South Sudan will be an added advantage.

We offer
Contract length: 6 months, with possibility for extension based on performance and subject to funding.
Level:A15
Designation of Duty Station: This is an ”Unaccompanied position” and applicants must be prepared to live and work in an unstable security environment with limited recreational and social facilities. Position is based in field location (currently Bentiu and Maban) with frequent travel to Juba.
Start date: July 1st 2017
